Mr. Matthew Gutman

Neurosurgeon and Spinal Surgeon

Dr Matthew Gutman is a Neurosurgeon and Spinal Surgeon with a specific interest in brain mapping for brain tumours and epilepsy, spinal disorders as well as neurovascular surgery. 

Dr Gutman currently serves as the lead for Epilepsy Surgery at The Alfred Hospital. He has undertaken further sub-specialized training around the world in flexible endoscopy, functional neurosurgery, neurovascular surgery and minimally invasive spine surgery. 

In 2024 Dr Gutman developed the first laser interstitial therapy (LITT) program in Victoria after being awarded The Dr Lena McEwan and Dame Joyce Daws Churchill fellowship to develop advanced neuro-modulation and lesioning techniques for epilepsy and brain tumour surgery.

Dr. Joshua Laing

Neurologist and Epileptologist

Dr Joshua Laing is an experienced neurologist and epileptologist specializing in Seizures and Epilepsy, including first seizures and adolescents transitioning from pediatric to adult epilepsy care.

Dr Laing has specific expertise in current and emerging advanced epilepsy therapies including curative epilepsy surgery (SEEG, ECOG, LITT) and neuromodulation for drug-resistant epilepsy, accepting local and interstate referrals. 

Dr Laing is Deputy Director of Epilepsy at the Alfred Comprehensive Epilepsy Program, Director of Epilepsy and EEG services at Peninsula Health, has a PhD in clinical epilepsy and is a clinical research fellow at Monash University Department of Neurosciences.

Dr. Brett Frenkiel

Interventional Sports Medicine Physician

MBBS, BBSc, MS(Hon), FACSEP

Dr Brett Frenkiel is a Sport and Exercise Medicine specialist and has a passion for treating all musculoskeletal injuries and musculoskeletal pain.

Dr Frenkiel has a special interest in interventional pain management techniques, utilising ultrasound, CT and fluoroscopy to help manage pain and achieve the best outcomes for his patients. After obtaining his medical degree in 2009, Dr Frenkiel spent two years at Monash University, researching new ways to treat problematic inflammation and fibrosis where he obtained a Master of Surgery.

Dr Frenkiel has extensive sports medicine experience, most recently working as the Chief Medical Officer at St. Kilda Football club, where he was team doctor for 10 years.
